SAN JOSE, Calif., and SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 21 /PRNewswire/ --
Actel Corporation (Nasdaq: ACTL), a supplier of programmable logic solutions
including VariCore(TM) embedded FPGA cores, and LogicVision, a leading
provider of embedded test intellectual property (IP) solutions, today
announced a joint partnership effort in the area of embedded IP test.
The
companies will work together to offer a complete embedded self-test solution
to users of Actel's VariCore embedded programmable gate array (EPGA(TM)) IP
cores.
The partnership brings together the expertise of both companies to
solve the increasingly complex challenges of system-on-a-chip (SoC) design and
test.
(Photo:

reconfigurability to application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) and
application-specific standard product (ASSP) SoC applications.
LogicVision's
embedded test capability will deliver to users of Actel's VariCore EPGA cores
testability throughout the design, manufacturing and system deployment phases
of the product application on both conventional and low-cost testers.
The
first step in providing a fully embedded test solution, a tool flow
qualification analysis between LogicVision's test capability and VariCore EPGA
cores, has been completed.
The solution creates an EPGA core fully compatible with LogicVision's
embedded test IP products and test re-use methodology.
The functionality
enables users of the Actel VariCore EPGA to embed the reprogrammable core into
a LogicVision embedded test SoC environment.
In enabling the solution, the
time to implement test is significantly reduced and the overall SoC test
coverage is increased through the use of the LogicVision embedded test
environment.
``The increasing usage of Star IP cores, like VariCore reprogrammable
EPGAs, in very complex SoCs represents significant opportunities for design
and challenges for test,'' commented Rodger Sykes, vice president of marketing
and business development at LogicVision.
``The challenge is not only to
efficiently test these cores once they have been embedded into the SoC design,
but to have the ability to re-use this test capability throughout the design,
manufacturing and system deployment phases of the SoC product life.
Clearly,
advantages can be gained by having the ability to re-use test to validate
cores after remote and in-field reprogramming.
LogicVision is now working
closely with Actel to ensure that this comprehensive testability is available
to our mutual customers.''
``Actel believes that broad adoption of our new embedded reprogrammable
cores is in large part dependent on integrating our cores with all elements of
our customers' ASIC design methodology and design flow,'' stated
Dr. Yankin Tanurhan, senior director of embedded FPGA at Actel Corporation.
``Partnering with LogicVision will help assure that all elements of the
customer's post-design test flow are reliably integrated, making an important
contribution to our goal of providing a complete development solution.''
About VariCore IP Cores
Actel's VariCore embedded reprogrammable EPGA logic IP cores, based on
0.18-micron SRAM technology, were introduced by the company in February 2001.
The company describes VariCore IP as scaleable, reprogrammable ``soft hardware''
that is embedded in licensee SoC silicon designs.
VariCore EPGA Star IP
technology is being licensed to ASIC manufacturers and ASSP providers as well
as through three major independent foundries:
UMC, Chartered Semiconductor
and TSMC.
